My charter

Companies, professions and service providers give a measure of accountability for their customers by acting in accordance with a charter. So why shouldn’t a councillor give similar accountability to those who live and work in his/her ward?

As your elected councillor, I will serve Ellacombe in a whole range of ways, but particularly within the terms of this charter, which is my guarantee to you. In doing this, I aim to set new standards for accountability of councillors.

I will:

  • Fight for ‘fair shares’ for Ellacombe (safer streets, cleaner streets, investment in schools, investment in youth projects, investment in facilities for the whole community)

      • Raise all issues of concern to the people of Ellacombe.

          • Take only the existing allowances for councillors, and vote against any increases in allowances during the whole life of the council. If any increases are voted in, then I would refuse to take it.

              • Help Ellacombe residents and workers to develop their understanding not only of their rights, but also their responsibilities as citizens.

                  • Ensure proper recognition of the contribution of Ellacombe to the wider Torbay community.

                      • Contribute business management skills to the running of our council.

                          • Work to deliver a more professionally run local authority, including support for the office of directly elected mayor

                              • Ensure that my role as councillor and the business of the council is made more transparent for the Ellacombe electorate

I first published this charter back in 2006, when I was campaigning to be a councillor.

As a candidate for the Torbay Mayoral Election in 2015, I will be publishing a new charter as part of my Mayoral Manifesto: information will be included on this page when it is available.

As with my Councillor's Charter: hold me to it!
